On April 24th, Prof. Li Hongxing, Distinguished Professor and Director of Academic Committee of the School of Applied Mathematics, visited the University of California, Berkeley at Prof L. A. Zadeh 's invitation and delivered a special academic report there. Prof L. A. Zadeh is the founder of fuzzy set theory and University of California, Berkeley is the cradle of Fuzzy Mathematics, too. The title of the report is: Stabilization of Four-stage Inverted Pendulum—A Problem of High Complexity.

In the seminar, Dr. Roberto Pieraccini, Chief Executive Officer of International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) firstly made a welcoming address. Then Prof. T.Y.Lin from San Jose State University, founder of Granular Computing, took the chair and introduced main participated scholars. Besides, Prof. Zadeh briefly introduced the application and progress of Fuzzy Mathematics in pendulum control. He highly commended Prof. Li for his impressive contributions to the study of the control theory.

After that, Prof. Li took more than one hour to make a report on his achievements on fuzzy control and conducted a demonstrative experiment on the spot. When this experiment of high complexity and difficulty was successfully completed, all the scholars presented, including Prof. Zadeh, showered applause on him.

Prof. Li and his research team began their work on inverted pendulum system since 2001, and finally realized the quadruple inverted pendulum system's practicality control through programming in August, 2002, which came first in the world. Moreover, after eight years’ hard work, the team also became the first one all over the world that proposes quadruple inverted pendulum system from a dimensional prospective.
