On June 29, 2012, one of the series lectures of HOB (Harvard-Oxford-BNUZ) International Youth Leader Development Camp: Lighthouse Project—the growth of an NGO in China was held at B210 of Liyun Building. Dr. Changyun Kang, international program consultant of the Development Division, Dr. Bo Wu, researcher of Center On Philanthropy of Sun Yat-sen University, Ms. Sixin Lu, deputy director-general and secretary-general of Lighthouse Project, Mr. Haogen Yao, doctorial student of educational economics at Columbia University, as well as HOB campers presented in the lecture.

To start the lecture, Mr. Haogen Yao, doctorial student of educational economics at Columbia University and director of Lighthouse Project, gave an introduction to Lighthouse Project. Lighthouse Project, started in March of 2001, is a rural-oriented volunteer project based at Guangzhou. By organizing urban well-educated volunteers to perform short-term teaching and communicate with local rural teachers, it aims to share educational resources of two areas, arouse rural students’ motivation to learn and pursue a better life. Through helping local students to establish a healthy and positive outlook on life, hopefully the project can facilitate the education development at remote areas and thus promote sustainable development at rural areas.

After that, a documentary film was played to introduce one specific volunteer teaching project carried out by Lighthouse Project volunteers in a remote area of Qingyuan City, Guangdong Province. At the end of the lecture is Q&A section. Ms. Sixin Lu answered questions from campers patiently.

As far as we know, Lighthouse Project will be a theme activity in the HOB program. Dr. Changyun Kang said: HOB program aims to improve the cross-culture perspective and decision-making capability of campers through professional activity design. Among those abilities we want to train our campers, leadership is one of the most important characteristics. The leadership that Lighthouse Project volunteers displace during their volunteer teaching is what we want our campers to learn.
