In the evening of Nov. 27th, the fourth lecture of Lecture Series by Foreign Professors was successfully held in Room C102, Leyu Building. Mr. Dave Jaye from School of Foreign Languages gave a fantastic lecture on the theme of “Comparative Study on Western Culture and Oriental Culture”. Except around 60 students from the School of Foreign Languages, there were also over 100 students from other schools attracted to this special lecture. Dr. Phillip Stevenson, Dr. Matthew Conduct, Dr. Richard Stopford, Mr. Brian Harrison, Mr. Gerard Brent, Mr. Andrew Engler, Mr. Neville Swartz, Mr. Brett Gearing and Associate Prof. Li Fusheng from the School of Foreign Languages also attended the lecture as special guests.

The lecture is rich in content. At first, Mr. Dave Jaye introduced the western culture’s ancient Greek origin and illustrated how it developed into current being. Besides, with an aid of photos and pictures, he also compared the western culture with oriental culture, including their notion about time, aesthetics, human relations as well as thinking pattern. He believes that we should try to explore the cultural differences and at the same time embrace them with an open mind. Then he also used several caricatures to illustrate the poor habits developed in different cultural backgrounds. At last, he praised the wonderful cultural traditions he’s seen in BNUZ and BNUZ-ers.
To the students, such lecture is a great benefit, which serves as an efficient platform for the students to know the differences between western culture and oriental culture.
