On November 30th, the 2nd International Chinese Debating Competition came to an end at BNUZ. After 5 days of fierce debating, the representative team of CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong) became the winner and Zhan Qingyun from CUHK won the best debater. Prof. Tu Qingyun, President of BNUZ made a speech in the closing ceremony and awarded the team.

This year’s schedule is divided into four parts: preliminaries, rematch, semi-finals and finals. 24 debate teams had a series of debates on the topics like “should telling public the truth weight more than respecting for the privacy in news reports”, “should the transaction of marijuana be legalized in China”, “whether or not adhering to the pursuit of true love is irrational behavior”, and so on. The competition enjoys a splendid ideology and spiritual feast. The 24 teams from world-famous universities, the witty-remarks from the 15 judges, and the brilliant quotes of the debaters…altogether made the competition lively, witty humor, quips and touching, and brought about applauses again and again.

Moreover, there were also further improvements in the debate competition system this year. In addition to competitive debate, which focuses on confrontation, we added philosophical debate competition to refine technical requirements of debating. Philosophical depth and reasoning entirety served as the main criteria, with regards to the variety of Chinese debating approaches.

In the Demonstration Competition held on November 30th, the 2014 International Chinese Debating Competition triggered a new boom. The debating topic is “whether or not RANG (i.e. giving-away to others) be a virtue”. And 8 renowned debaters participated in the Demonstration Competition, including Lu Yiming, CCTV Host and member of the best team of the 1991 International Varsity Debate Varsity（IVDV）; Huang Zhizhong, the best debater of the 2005 IVDV; Lin Zhengjiang, member of the best team of the 1995 IVDV; Ma Weiwei, member of the best team of the 2003 IVDV and so on. Hu Jianbiao served as the president. They brought us an informative, eloquence and exciting competition, leaving the audience an unforgettable impression.

As Prof. Tu pointed out, this year's competition has innovated the debate competition system, added philosophical debate competition, and sought to highlight the speculative depth, while creating a new model of Chinese debating. In the competition, each debate team has deepened their thinking on the reality, broadened their search for truth, and consolidated their friendship.
