The 8th Guangdong College Students Law Debate Competition Successfully Held in BNUZ

From May 17th to May 19th, the 8th "Dongfang Ze Cup" Guangdong College Students Law Debate Competition, initiated by the Communist Youth League Committee of Guangdong Province, together with Zhuhai Students Federation, BNUZ’s Committee of Communist Youth League, BNUZ’s School of Government and Law, and the Guangdong "Dongfang Ze" Law Firm, was successfully held in BNUZ. Twelve teams from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Shantou held fierce debates on issues about social affairs, livelihood focus, philosophy and controversial policies. And finally, debate team from the Law School of Shenzhen University won the first prize, with South China Normal University the second prize, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Shantou University the third prize.

The opening ceremony of the competition was held on May 17th at room A102, Liyun Building. Heads of BNUZ’s School of Government and Law—Yu Fengzheng, Xiao Jie, Hu Xuemei, Shen Shuzhen and He Guangcai—along with deputy secretary of BNUZ’s Committee of Communist Youth League, Chen Xianbing, and chairman on duty of Zhuhai Students Federation, Zhang Mengying and so on attended the ceremony.

Prof. Yu Zhengfeng, dean of BNUZ’s School of Government and Law, firstly expressed warm welcome to participants. He pointed out that the competition provided an excellent chance for students to broaden their horizons and enrich their knowledge. It also made significant contributions to improving their team work abilities as well as developing education on law among colleges in Guangdong.

Chen Xianbing, deputy secretary of BNUZ’s Committee of Communist Youth League made a speech afterwards and pointed out that the competition was a perfect platform for the students to exchange their ideas and thoughts. He emphasized that modern college students should not only have solid professional knowledge, good psychological quality, but also the ability of critical thinking, good expression and determination and that was why the participated universities made joint efforts to initiate this competition.

The theme of the competition is “Understand the Current Situation, Reading the Society, and the Chinese Dream”. It had a very grand broad of judges, including Dr. Li Leiming, member of adjudicatory committee of Zhuhai Municipal Intermediate People's Court, Ma Xiaohua, Senior Prosecutor of Zhuhai Municipal People's Procuratorate, Hua Yichen, senior lawyer from the Guangdong "Dongfang Ze" Law Firm, Zhang Kai, member of the debate team of Guangdong Lawyers Association, Zhang Li, Instructor of Zhuhai Lawyers Association, Hu jianbiao, instructor of BNUZ’s debate team, Prof. Li Baojun from BNUZ’s School of Government and Law, and student representatives from the 12 universtities.

The competition started in the morning of May 18th at Lize Buidling. There were twelve debate topics including “China should/ should not adopt chemical castration punishment” “Hong Kong should / should not be issued a purchase order on milk powder” and so on. After fierce debates, four teams won the chance to the next turn.
