On May 16th, Dr. Harvey Millar from Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University had a teaching seminar with the faculties from International Business Faculty. Prof. Shujie Li, Deputy Dean of IBF hosted the seminar with a theme of Create a Vibrant Classroom, from Boring to Exciting.

In 1990, Dr. Millar was graduated from Nova Scotia College of Technology with a PHD in Industrial Engineering Philosophy. Since 2002, he was appointed as a professor and has had a teaching experience for nearly thirty years. On the seminar, Dr. Millar inspired the faculties to discuss on “How to Teach Well Involves Faculties’ Role as an Instructor or Facilitator”. He considered that faculties are supposed to transfer from being an “instructor” to a “facilitator“. Then he went further in what kind of a “facilitator” is required in skills.

Subsequently, Dr. Millar presented his views about how students learn and learners’ features at information age. He considered that what students expected from faculties are after-class feedback, guidance and innovation of knowledge applications rather than bald explanations on theories, concepts and formulas. Based on his views, he put forward a concept of “go over the classroom”. It means that students are arranged to focus on group works and case analysis in class with guidance to enhance learning effect. So required knowledge points are supposed to be self-learned before class. For students, better knowledge acquisition and innovative applications can be reached through the process. As for faculties, boring turns into exciting with high involvement of students.

At the end of the seminar, Dr. Millar introduced some practicable teaching assistant software. Applying the software, faculties are able to raise teaching efficiency and grasp the students understanding of knowledge through statistics analysis. Prof. Li showed gratitude to Dr. Millar on behalf of all faculties. He also admired Dr. Millar’s enthusiasm in teaching for nearly 30 years. Furthermore, faculties who were present indicated that their teaching ideas were widen through the inspiration of the seminar.
