The School of Information Technology was founded in 2002, on the basis of the rich resources of the School of Information Science and Technology of BNU. It aims to cultivate students as practical, all-round professionals in information and computer technology area. The number of the current full-time students is approximately 1,440.

The teaching staff mainly consists of excellent professors from BNU and other top universities, scholars from the U.S, the U.K, Japan and Canada, and engineers from famous software companies. A large number of teachers are not only academically qualified but also have extensive professional experiences which can be incorporated into their daily teaching.

A number of professional laboratories have been built and the laboratory center has been awarded "the Model Laboratory on Computer Practice Teaching of Guangdong", and the laboratory for graphics and digital city and the laboratory for network technology have become the public service platform for research units and software enterprises of Zhuhai. More labs are to be built in the next few years.

The school strives to collaborate in student and visiting-scholar exchange with famous universities in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the U.S and the U.K. It has explored avenues for students to study abroad and about 10% of the students are enrolled by overseas universities every year. It has also established cooperative relationship with the industry and has signed cooperation agreement with 166 IT companies and research communities in Pearl River Delta area, which provides numerous internship and job opportunities for students.

The school has a software institute and 4 research centers, including the Remote Sensing and GIS Center, the Education Information Center, the IT Research and Development Center and the IT Training Center. The research of the school currently focuses on the following areas: remote sensing and geographic information system, digital media, 3-D display, computer game development, network and telecommunication, embedded system, logistics system and RFID technology.
