On November 28th, The Impression of Hamburg Art Exhibition was held at GuYuan Art Museum in Zhuhai, with the impact of vision and auditory, citizens appreciated the art, history, genuine beauty of Germany. The one who brought the exhibition was a German artist. He, named Ulrich Schwedes, was the teacher of Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai.

An Unusual Exhibition

Different from general exhibitions, in this show, audience appreciated photographs on the special devices called the "Magic Drum" instead of normal exhibition halls. It roughly consisted of two parts: a cuboid wooden box placed with the cylinder, which could make sound by knocking. In the hollow cylinder, there was a round of black paper together with similar photographs. If you spin it, you would find out dynamic pictures under the light. Various photographic subjects in five layers, Mr. Ulrich Schwedes filmed these pictures in Hamburg over the recent years.

An Impact on Visual and Auditory Sense

"Please knock on the top of wooden boxes matching the suitable sounds that you feel with chopsticks, drumstick, brush, even your fingers; or stay quiet and listen to the echoes of nature." Every series had a note to remind people of participating. It was an interactive exhibition which everyone could make soundtracks for the “peepshow” format.

At the scene of the exhibition, Mr. Ulrich Schwedes invited his friends to play the drums. With the rotation of the "Magic Drum ", continuous pictures appeared above the center of the drum. Under the guidance of this rhythmic percussion, audiences began to knocking on the drums with various tools aside. At that time, the exhibition hall was full of drumbeats though there was a little bit noisy, the curiosity and enthusiasm of audiences had raised up.

Born in the Baden state of Germany, Mr. Ulrich Schwedes once had established "Werkhol" art club, which transformed the idle factories into studios and galleries. He began to make waste profitable based on “Werkhol”. Bao Zewei, the curator of GuYuan gallery said: "It's a new vision, it’s a new feeling. Mr. Ulrich Schwedes promoted our further consideration in the field of visual awareness by restructuring materials and transforming the waste into to treasure. I hope the audiences could think about what Mr. Ulrich Schwedes wants to present through the photographs, when they appreciating these works of art.".

Thinking Individually

Mr. Ulrich Schwedes started to teach photography and vision courses for the students of Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai in 2008. He loved Zhuhai very much, and he was very impressed with the students of BNUZ. "They are not lazy at all. Besides, they can make a difference as long as they have a little interest. " he said.

After interviewed with the Journalists’ Group of Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai, Mr. Ulrich Schwedes gave suggestions to students who majored in his courses. He hoped the students to think individually rather than "copy" and "paste" while contacting with the real objects.

When it comes to the history of film, it’s been a long time since the birth of “peepshow” format. However, the “peepshow” is older than the glory of the cine film’s past. These days, digital photography technology had taken the place, the modernists barely knew about it. If you want to experience the “magic” of old film production technology in person, then come to GuYuan Gallery and have a good time. The exhibition would last until December 15th.
